The Mountain Race, as it is locally known, was first run in 1960 as part of the village show and every year since 1973 (excluding 2001 foot & mouth). It is a traditional village show fell race, one from the showground to the highest local peak and back.

The race is held each year on August Bank Holiday Monday as part of the Cilcain Show.

WA Mountain Running Champs

We are delighted that the 2024 race will incorporate the Welsh Athletics Senior (Short) Inter-Regional Mountain Running Championships & North Wales Regional Championships.

With regard to the Welsh Athletics Senior (Short) Mountain Running Champs, the first two male and first female eligible Welsh finisher will be selected for the Trofeo Vanoni Relays event in Italy in October.

Main Race

The existing format sees the race start & finish by the church and a loop route – up the zig-zags and down the north spur. The course is approx 7.4km and 380m height gain/loss.

The race starts 1pm with registration from 11.00am-12.30pm in the churchyard. Entries online or on day (cash only). Minimum age 15 on 31st December.

Junior Races

U15 & U13 Junior races will form part of the main race setting off from Waterworks as the main race passes (approx 1pm) to avoid first section of road. Categories U15 (5k 250m), U13 (3k 100m) – Under 11 can run with parent/guardian by prior agreement with RO. Reg from 10.30am in churchyard. Free entry.

U11/U9/U7 races (12 NOON START) take place in the fields out the back of the showground. All categories run same route (1km 50m) – 2 laps of field boundary. Reg from 10.30am in churchyard. Free entry.
