The Mountain Race, as it is locally known, was first run in 1960 as part of the village show and every year since 1973 (excluding 2001 foot & mouth). It is a traditional village show fell race, one from the showground to the highest local peak and back.
The race is held each year on August Bank Holiday Monday as part of the Cilcain Show.
Online Entries only (£5 inc processing fee). NOTE: entry fee does not include showground entry fee this year. NO ENTRY ON DAY.

WA Mountain Running Champs
We are delighted that the 2026 race will again incorporate the Welsh Athletics Senior (Short) Inter-Regional Mountain Running Championships & North Wales Regional Championships.

Main Race
The existing format sees the race start & finish by the church and a loop route – up the zig-zags and down the north spur. The course is approx 7.4km and 380m height gain/loss.
The race starts 1pm with registration from 11.00am-12.30pm in the churchyard. Minimum age 16 on 31st December.
Junior Races – (WFRA Insured)
U16/U14/U12/U10/U8 races (12 NOON START) take place in the fields out the back of the showground. U16 3k 150m. U14 1.5k 75m. U12/U10 run same route (1km 50m) – 2 laps of field boundary. U8 run single lap 0.5km 25m Reg from 10.30am in churchyard. Free entry.
